## Technology 101 ## Information Technology has revolutionized the world in which we live in unlike any other field or industry has done before it. As advances are made in IT, new opportunities are created through various technologies to make our lives easier and more productive than ever before. With the advent of computers and other technology, people have been able to work from remote locations around the world as well as from home. Networking technology has revolutionized the way we communicate with one another as well as making it possible for us to do more things easier and faster. ## Networking Technology ## Networking is a very diverse field. It bridges together all different kinds of technologies to make our lives easier and more efficient. The first network - ARPANET, was built in 1962 by a group of computer scientists at a time when computers were mainframes that took up an entire room full of equipment and were not at all portable devices that we use every day such as laptops or phones. ## Internet Technology ## The Internet is a vast network of computer networks that interconnect all different kinds of information and communication technologies. The Internet is an international public network. It is a network of networks, or what some might call a meta-network. The Internet is a private organization that performs administrative functions for the Federal government and the Federal government is the only organization that can legally create new organizations on the Internet. The ARPANET connected computers in a "store and forward" fashion. This means that they were connected by wires and computers could only download data from other connected computers when they were not being used, or when they were waiting for more data from another computer to arrive so it could be sent back out again. The ARPANET was a mainframe computer that was very hard to use if you were not a technical expert. ## World Wide Web ## In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee proposed a new network technology called the World Wide Web. The first version of the World Wide Web went online in 1991. The purpose of this new network system was to transfer data from one computer to another, which made it possible for people on the Internet to share information and communicate with one another. Today, more than twenty-five percent of the world's population has access to the Internet and about twenty-four percent use it frequently at least once a week. ## Digital Photography ## Digital photography is the use of digital computer technology in the processes of capturing images, storing them, editing them, printing them, or sharing them with others. A digital camera uses a memory device called a digital image sensor to capture an image. The resulting image can then be edited in software on a computer. ## Smartphone ## A smartphone is a portable mobile phone that is equipped with many of the features of personal computers including Internet access and Internet-capable applications. Many smartphones are configured to access the Internet with wireless devices that allow for two-way text messaging. Smartphones are similar to pocket pagers but are smaller and have fewer features than traditional cell phones.
